Spreading the word at the Don Mills Kiwanis Club
By Lois Dent, President of Concerned Friends

March 2008- Concerned Friends board members are always pleased to accept invitations to speak about our mission and our activities. Recently I was invited to speak to the Kiwanis Club of Don Mills Golden K, a community-oriented, active group of retired seniors from all walks of life. There were approximately 50 men in attendance at the St. Mark's Presbyterian Church auditorium where I was greeted warmly and offered refreshment before the official meeting began. My presentation focused on our advocacy work and the issues that we feel are key to improving the long-term care system in Ontario . Afterwards we engaged in a lively and informative question and answer session. We shared some personal experiences with the system, discussed some of the barriers to improvements, and what might be done to bring about positive change. I was also very pleased to accept a generous donation to Concerned Friends from the Kiwanis Club of Don Mills.

We appreciate every opportunity we have to talk to interested groups about Concerned Friends, our activities and the important issues affecting the quality of care in long-term care homes. Many people are not aware of how the system works and no one expects to have to use it until suddenly the need arises.

One of the goals of Concerned Friends is to provide information to the public about issues of quality of care and the general conditions facing residents. Speaking with groups such as the Kiwanis Club of Don Mills Golden K is very rewarding because I learn so much from the informal discussions that take place.

If you know of a group that would like to learn about Concerned Friends and long-term care issues, just give us a call at 416-489-0146.
